Slim Goodies is GOOOOOOD
This small funky diner was one of the first places to re-open after Katrina. Kappa Horn, owner of the popular breakfast joint, returned to New Orleans shortly after the storm and despite the ruined streets and chaos in the city, served bottled water, and anything she had on paper plates to people who came to her door. The Restaurant was almost like a community center for people who were stranded residents as well as volunteer and emergency workers. Kappa recalls mostly the humidity – the electricity was not on in the city – and the difficulty in trying to provide food for people on limited resources. While many of the stores and homes in the flood-free-Garden District closed their doors in fear of robbery, Kappa’s was wide open. It was a depressing time for her. Returning to the city and knowing that many of her closest friends just were not going to come back. Nothing was the same. Now, however, three years later, the lines for Slim Goodies are out the door and around the corner come breakfast time. The diner makes a killing on t-shirts and people both new and old to the city are grateful for its history and service during the flood.
Greasy, a little bit hip, a little bit scattered, this place features an awesome variety of breakfast and diner food, including incredible vegetarian dishes. Diner classics like burgers and milkshakes are done right, but there are plenty of Cajun twists like Creole crawfish omelets, and sweet potato pancakes. Its cash only and if you are going to swing by I recommend getting their early or going late afternoon before they close so you can avoid the worst of the lines.
